Jeheh Melli Iran-Europe THE HONOURABLE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES SENATE AND CONGRESS Jebheh Melli Iran in Europe is extremely concerned about the build up of American forces in the Persian Gulf, the war preparation and the possibility of an attack on Iran. Jebheh Melli Iran, our mother organization in Tehran, is a political party founded 57 years ago with the goal of establishing democratic government and full commitment to the International Bill of Human Rights to which Iran has been a signatory. JMI has been and still is the most respected opposition political organisation in Iran by the people for its steadfastness, unwavering devotion to democracy and human rights. JMI, true to the Iranian heritage, has always maintained the highest standards of integrity, truthfulness and public leadership. You are certainly aware that the democratically elected government of Dr. Mossadegh, founder of Jebheh Melli, was overthrown by a coup organised by CIA and MI5 back in 1953.This coup stopped the process of democratisation in Iran and other Middle Eastern countries. What we are witnessing today in the Middle East is the consequence of that ill advised action. Your experience in Iraq has proved that war and violence are not suitable means for the establishment of democracy and can strengthen extreme and fanatic forces. We have no doubt that the Islamic government in Iran, by adopting ill advised and inflexible policies, has had its share in the creation of this critical situation. We as a part of the Iranian opposition condemn the tension creating policies of the Islamic government in Iran and we believe that this will have grave consequences for Iran and the whole Middle East. For the past 28 years Iranians have had to bear a regime which has nothing to offer its people but oppression, incompetence and poverty. The Islamic Republic, divided and divisive by nature, would not have lasted in its present belligerent form, if it hadn’t been for continued international isolation, sanctions and embargos. The continued pressure from abroad has been instrumental in keeping the least worthy and the most fanatic in positions of power and decision making. We expect the international community to adapt a more realistic approach towards Iran. Any attack on Iran would result in misery for the Iranian people similar to that experienced in Iraq. There would be shortages of food, water and electricity, lack of security, rampant inflation and shortages of jobs and many other problems that millions of innocent people have to face. The Iranian population by and large has a thirst for democracy and hate their undemocratic government. They need support for their struggle to achieve their civil rights and certainly not destruction of their country. Iran is a large country with a young and educated population and extensive natural resources. If instead of destruction of their country by war, help was given to their civil struggle for achievement of democracy, there would be no need for war and Iran could turn to a force for stability and progress in the Middle East. Now it is up to you honourable Senators and Members of the Congress to prevent the war by taking a courageous anti war stance. At this critical juncture in history we hope that you will listen to your conscience and prevent the creation of another Iraq. The war will not serve the interest of the United States or Iran. Long live democracy and freedom Long live international peace and friendship.
